Will draining the transmission fluid by taking off the transmission fluid pan also drain the torque converter?

I'm thinking about changing the transmission fluid on a 1990 Pontiac Bonneville, through the pan... as the seal needs replaced. However, I don't know how much transmission oil to put back in. It says it takes 6 qts. for a fluid and filter change... but that it will need 11 qts. if the torque converter is changed.

Also, what kind of seal do I use on the gasket? Will draining the transmission fluid by taking off the transmission fluid pan also drain the torque converter?
it wont all drain, but over all you will get enough out of it to be ok for a fluid change, as long as you are not changing it to clean the system out...

ive taken the line off of the tranny cooler, started the car, and let it pump itself out while filling the dipstick tube, worked well for meWill draining the transmission fluid by taking off the transmission fluid pan also drain the torque converter?
if you have the front end raised then part of the fluid from the torque converter will drain out too.don,t fool with the seals if they are not leaking besides to replace the front seal you have to pull the transmission. yours probably takes the same as my 88 oldsmobile. mine took about 7 quarts. most of the gaskets you buy don,t require any sealer. if they have them ask for the rubber gasket. when you get ready to fill it let your car down and fill it to almost the full mark on the stick, start your car and let it idle on its own, hold your brake and go through all the gears and back up in park, check the fluid and fill it but leave it down about 1/2 quart on the stick. take it for a drive and bring it back, park on a level surface and fill it to the full mark on the stick. don,t overfill it because you can blow a seal. Will draining the transmission fluid by taking off the transmission fluid pan also drain the torque converter?
Many finer cars have torque converter drain plugs. Your car does not, though. I would go to a GM dealership, and ask if they have a special on trans fluid changes. They will have the EXACT right trans fluid, and filter, and gasket for the job. Don't even think about having this done by a quicky lube. They use generic universal fluid. It has different properties. READ your owner's manual for the right %26quot;fluid specifications.%26quot; Expect to pay around $150 for this service. And, you are right for doing this!!!Will draining the transmission fluid by taking off the transmission fluid pan also drain the torque converter?
For your transmission fluid change (by dropping the transmission pan) all you should need is the 6 quarts. The 11 quarts is used when a transmission is replaced and the torque converter was emptied.

When you do a transmission fluid change, you don't actually change all of the fluid (because the torque converter retains 5 quarts)... however, the solution to pollution is dilution. By changing the fluid regularly (every 30,000 miles) then you are able to maintain the proper consistency that is recommended by the manufacturer.

Remember, when you check the fluid level, you need to do it with the engine running and fluid hot.

I hope this helps.

the contents of the torque converter will remain in that converter. there is a drain plug on some of them if you want to risk creating a leak. if you are only dropping the pan on the thm 440t4, 4t60, or the 4t65e (depending on which generation you are looking at), the pan only holds the 6 qts. that pan gasket is reusable on most of them. start with the 6 qts ans check the level.
