How do i change my transmission fluid on my 1991 Cehvy S-10 manual transmission. and what fluid to use.?

well you just pull out the drain plug and the fill plug let it drain out into a pan then put the drain plug back in and refill it. The tough part is knowing what type of fluid to put back in. In 1991 the chevy S-10 had 2 different transmissions. One takes regular dexron III and the other one takes a fluid called synchromesh. It will look like oil or even a thin gear lube. It is basically a 5w30 oil with synthetic additives in it. I dont really know how to tell you what type of fluid it is and you will even find that the dealers and auto parts stores will give you conflicting answers. I own and operate 3 pennzoil oil changes and when we have one come in without an owners manual we have a 1-800 from Pennzoil that supplies us with the technologial answers like these. What they have on their end is pictures of the tranny and we need to tell them where the drain and the fill plugs are located. THey can then tell us what type of fluid it takes. I can tel you that GM never put gear lubbe in it manual trannies if it does not look red at all then I is most likely synchromesh which you will have to get at a dealership. Hope this helps if you still cant figure it out email me and tell me where the drain and fill plugs are located and I can call the hotline and get the correct answer for you. I willl also need to know if it is a 4 or 5 speed.

You don't use fluid. You use gear oil.How do i change my transmission fluid on my 1991 Cehvy S-10 manual transmission. and what fluid to use.?
You don檛. It uses synthetic oil and is not scheduled to be changed, call the service department of a dealer and verify what I just told you. Transmission fluid is an oil.

I have a 1996 GMC Sonoma, and thought the same thing as you, took it to Goodyear for the change, and they told me it would be a waste of money. How do i change my transmission fluid on my 1991 Cehvy S-10 manual transmission. and what fluid to use.?
There should be a drain plug at the bottom of the transmission case. Most of these newer transmissions take automatic transmission fluid ( Dexron ) due to the close tolerances, but check with a good parts store or your owners manual and it will tell you what kind to use. Some also use low viscosity Engine Oil...like 5w-30....so you see it's real important to use the right stuff. You will also need something to pump the fluid/oil into the transmission. I use to use a %26quot; suction gun%26quot; with a hose on it...either pour it in or use the gun to suck it in , then push the fluid into the transmission...should take a little shy of 3 Quarts. Good luck. How do i change my transmission fluid on my 1991 Cehvy S-10 manual transmission. and what fluid to use.?
you dont change the transmission fluid. just put more fluid in it. on the top of the trany there is a nut unscrew it and thats where you put the fluid in a manual transmission.you can drain it out if you want to and just put all new transmission fluid in it but you dont really have to change it like you do an automatic.if you dont know how to do it you should take it to a shop, but if you still want to go to autozone or a parts store and ask them what fluid to use.How do i change my transmission fluid on my 1991 Cehvy S-10 manual transmission. and what fluid to use.?
Drain the trans and fill to the bottom of the fill plug hole with 80W90 gear oil.....
