Can i change my own transmission fluid 2000 chevy silverado or do i need to take it to a shop???if so how?

i was just wondering if u need special tool or anything other than than regular tools to change my trucks tranmission fluid?????Can i change my own transmission fluid 2000 chevy silverado or do i need to take it to a shop???if so how?
No special tools needed. I woundn't worry about a 'flush' unless your current fluid is burnt. If it is still good and red, don't worry about the flush. I do my own fluid changes and I have 189k on my tranny, never had a flush, just a drain and fill.

You will need a socket set. Remove most of the bolts on the tranny pan (leave a couple at each corner to hold the pan), loosen the ones that you leave in, and more so on a corner so that you can somewhat control the draining of the fluid into a catch pan. If I remember correctly, you don't have a drain plug. It will be a messy job getting the pan off. After you have gotten some of the fluid out, push up on the pan with one hand and then remove the remaining bolts with the other. Then lower the pan and pour the fluid into your bucket.

Clean the inside of the pan with a cleaning solvent and remove any metal filings off of the magnet (don't worry it is normal for the magnet to have stuff on it!). Then remove the filter by pulling down on it. Then install your new one. Reinstall the pan using a new gasket, and tighten all the bolts. Go upstairs under the hood and pour in your fluid through the dipstick hose. Don't pour in the maximum capacity, stay a few pints low (can be found in your owners manual as well as the type of fluid to use). Then start the truck and place in drive, 2nd (your tranny does a force to 2nd gear) and reverse, to pump fluid through the valve body. Put it in park, and while running, clean the dipstick and check the level, add as necessary to bring it up to full.

Simple process, just a little messy. Can i change my own transmission fluid 2000 chevy silverado or do i need to take it to a shop???if so how?

Sure you can change your trans fluids you will meed a oversize pan trans filter and about 7 to 10 qt OT oil and most likely you cant drain the torque converter fluids and after all that work you start your engine and the new fluids from trans pan and the old fluids from the torque converter will mix, save yourself some trouble take to the trans shop and ask for trans oil change w flush will cost about 150 to 200 bucks but all your trans fluids will be clean
