When the car stops moving.

Or, when you notice the vehicle isn't shifting as smooth, and the acceleration as decreased and that sort of stuff. There might be a certain mileage where you should change it, but I don't feel like researching right now.How do you know when to change your transmission fluid?
It depends on what car, the make, the model and the year. A broad idea will be every 50.000 miles! How do you know when to change your transmission fluid?
First check your manual. It will give you a mileage recommendation. Next do you do normal driving or anything severe? Are you using a manual or automatic? Next check the fluid. The manual gives the procedure but for an automatic it essentially consists of warming up the transmission by driving around for quite a while. Park on a level surface. Put the trns thru EACH gear all the way down and then back up. Leave in park, pull the stick, look at the level and feel the fluid if its hot or not. Look at the fluid. Nice and pinkish or dark? Smell the fluid, does it smell burnt? All those are clues. How do you know when to change your transmission fluid?
Generally they are sealed for life although you check the level when servicing (or you think there might be a problem) and topping up .

The oil is not 'consumed' or affected as much as engine oil as it does not worked so hard or used at such high temperatures.

Here's how you can tell. Pull out and check the transmission dipstick (usually located near the firewall) and check the fluid. If it is brownish or dirty, you need a fluid and filter change. If it is reddish, it's OK. Also look into changing fluid if the vehicle shifts hard from gear to gear (jerks). That's the short answer. Hope this info helps. How do you know when to change your transmission fluid?
You normally don't change transmission fluid, unless metal shavings appear in the bottom of your pan. It is highly recommended that you change the filter when changing the fluid. Checking the fluid level and finding it low might indicate leaks at the transmission seals. To technical to get any deeper into the subject! How do you know when to change your transmission fluid?
