Anyone know how to change transmission fluid in a 2003 eclipse GS. (does it have a drain plug or a pan)?

I HAD A 2001 AND IT HAD A PLUG ABOUT 17MM ITS AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PAN FACING OUTWARD TOWARD THE DRIVERS SIDE.IT ALSO HAS A VERY THIN HEAD ON IT (NOT LIKE THE OIL DRAIN PLUG)Anyone know how to change transmission fluid in a 2003 eclipse GS. (does it have a drain plug or a pan)?
Usually you will have to remove the pan. As you do change the filter. You can install a drain plug, it would be easier and not as messy as dropping the entire pan. Just make sure you buy a good filter and a good quality fluid. Royal Purple AT fluid is good, but is high in cost. Good luck on staying clean!Anyone know how to change transmission fluid in a 2003 eclipse GS. (does it have a drain plug or a pan)?
you have both a plug and a pan do not remove the pan remove the plug by using a 13 r 14 socket

How do I change the transmission fluid on my 2007 Honda Civic?

I just went to get my oil changed and they guy told me that my transmission needed to be flushed and that it would cost me $90 (with tax its basically $100). I dont have this amount of money right now so I need some advice on how to do this at home. Please help and be as detailed as possible.

Thanks:)How do I change the transmission fluid on my 2007 Honda Civic?
I wouldn't be in a big hurry about it. check your owners amnual for interval - some manufacturers don't even recomend changing Auto trans fluid. 2007 isn't very old.

Auto trans fluid is pumped thru the radiator (seperate cooler inside). Remove either of the hoses and point it into a bucket. put a hose on the fitting you took it from, and point it into the bucket, too. Weight them down, they'll spray like a garden hose.

start engine, run it until fluid stops spraying. add 2.5 or 3 quarts and repeat. after about 11 quarts, fluid coming out will look new. Make sure to use the right kind of ATF- owners manual. No need to put it in gear.

The transmission has a built in pump. even when it stops spraying, its still plenty oily inside to not hurt anything. I've done this dozens of times

  • How do you change the transmission fluid on 99' BMW 323i?

Is it hard? I need to change mines asap. My car has about 93k miles on it. Will be changed today. Please be detailed about where i can find the input plug and how to drain. Best answer will get 10pts. ThanksHow do you change the transmission fluid on 99%26039; BMW 323i?
honestly you shouldnt change it, most of the times a transmission is serviced after so long it will start slipping to the point you need a new one.

but anyways back to your question. you dont really need the plug just take all bolts of the transmission but two. one on each side then slowly end evenly remove them with a oil pan already inplace to collect the oil, then when the pan is off remove the filter. clean the inside of the tranny. on the oil pan there should be at least one magnet that is used to collect small metal shavings, clean these then replace your filter follwed by the pan with newly installed gasket and bolt it up using only your hands then at the end use a ratchet to finish it off but dont bolt them up to tight or you would warp your new gasket. How do you change the transmission fluid on 99%26039; BMW 323i?
Do not be fooled into believing that there is a universal trans fluid. Go to BMW, and buy only the genuine BMW trans fluid, bottle by bottle. Also, most German automatics have a drain plug on the torque converter, to insure that 90% of the trans fluid is removed. Some of the German automatics use a fluid that is gold in color, based on synthetic mineral oils. BE VERY CAREFUL. If you are in doubt, have the dealership do this job for you. I am assuming that your car is an automatic. Only use genuine BMW trans filters and gaskets. Anything else is a waste of time and money!!! Good Luck!!How do you change the transmission fluid on 99%26039; BMW 323i?
It's easy as 1,2,3 for me anyways. All did on my manual transmission on my 01 330xi was drain and refill check bavauto.com under their newsletter, they have a DIY for it (do it yourself). I filled my with oem fluids that I got from the dealership. For and automatic you would just need to replace the transmission filter, so it's just an extra step. And yeah don't believe what bmw says about lifetime fluids, it should be change at around 70k miles.

Changing Transmission fluid in a Jeep Liberty?

Is Transmission fluid something that should be CHANGED OUT or can it be added to? Like buying a funnel and pouring a quart of new fluid in?

I want to make sure my fluids are good, but I need to get some transmission fluid, but I don't want to mess anything up.

I have a 2004 Jeep liberty, and if it needs to be changed, is it hard to do? And if i take it to a shop, how much do you think it will cost just for them to do this?

I live in Pensacola, FL.Changing Transmission fluid in a Jeep Liberty?
Yes it should be changed out, If I remember correctly everything 30 000miles.. However make sure the shop doing the work uses the correct Mopar ATF+4 trans fluid. If they do not it will cause damage to the transmission. Usually trans fluid flushes run around 200$. This will include the trans fluid filter, fluid and labor.Changing Transmission fluid in a Jeep Liberty?
Bite the bullet and take it to a trans shop, change the filter and adjust the trans shift points, and add new trans fluid. This is a high dollar replacement item, dont skimp.......Changing Transmission fluid in a Jeep Liberty?
My car has 150,000 original miles on the trans fluid. I wouldn't worry about it.Changing Transmission fluid in a Jeep Liberty?
if it,s just low then warm up your jeep good, park on a level surface, raise the rood, pull the stick out while it,s still running, wipe it off, put the stick back in, pull it back out and read it. if it reads low then put just enough in to where it shows full. smell the oil. if it smells burnt or looks dirty then change the fluid and filter. if it don,t have lots of miles on it and it changes gears good and the oil don,t smell burnt or it,s not dirty, you don,t need to change it.Changing Transmission fluid in a Jeep Liberty?
Transmission fluid can be changed. It isn't needed changed often unless the transmission is damaged. It isn't as easy a job as changing engine oil. Usually the trasnision pan has to be removed to get at the transmission filter, which is inside. Look in Chiltons Auto Repair manual to see if you want to go though all that- or if you can do it. Also, transmission fluid is specific to particular vehicles and if you put in the wrong fluid, it will damage the tranny by destroying the seals, and transmision multi-plate clutches.

If there isn't a problem, don't create one. I doubt your jeep needs a tranny fluid change this soon. Let the service dept look at it if it's acting up.

How do i change my transmission fluid?

I have a 95 Ford Mercury Mystique, and I actually need to add Lucas Transmission conditioner, to help with my gear slipping problem. I don't know where to find the dipstick.. is it the yellow one that seems to be underneath some other things? and i just use a funnel to put it in the dipstick hole, right? How do i change my transmission fluid?
Yup. That's the dipstick. Typically is IS yellow like you said, and should have a marking of a gear on it. On manual transmission automobiles you will not find a dipstick.

If it's been a while since your last tranny oil change go ahead and put fresh fluid in it, along with the lucas.

Good luck :)!How do i change my transmission fluid?
Yes,you are correct. How do i change my transmission fluid?
The lucas is a temporary helper. You should have your trans fluid changed, but ONLY if the fluid they are using conforms to the specifications listed in your OWNER's MANUAL FLUID SPECIFICATION SHEET. You must use fluid that clearly states on the label, %26quot;designed to met Ford spec's%26quot;. THERE IS NO UNIVERSAL TRANS FLUID. These fluids are car-maker specific. Remember that your torque converter holds at least 2-3 quarts of old, ineffective fluid. You will have to change the fluid 2-3 times to dilute down the %26quot;bad%26quot; stuff. I would only use Mobil One Synthetic trans fluid for Ford cars. It gets pricey because you will waste some of it. Be sure to change your filter, as well. Wash down the underside of the valve body with chlorinated brake clean. THis will dislodge potentially trapped clutch material that wanders around the trans cawe lloking for trouble. SEE??

How often do you change your transmission fluid + filter ? I lately been hearing once a year !?

Hey fellow Dodge / Chrysler owners ! This may not result in a 'best' answer, but more so multiple helpful answers ! We all know Chrysler sure doesn't make an invincible, million mile life transmission, but wtheck.

Now the normal i understand is every 30,000 miles.

Lately I've been hearing once a year ? Is this crazy or could prove to be worthwhile trying it ?How often do you change your transmission fluid + filter ? I lately been hearing once a year !?
i change mine every 25 thousand or three years which ever comes first, they recommend doing it at least every 36 thousand miles, good luck. How often do you change your transmission fluid + filter ? I lately been hearing once a year !?
You can change it whenever. I do mine like 10,000 to 15,000 miles. OR a year. which ever comes first. How often do you change your transmission fluid + filter ? I lately been hearing once a year !?
It's not like it can hurt to change it every year!! I would say 3 years. It depends on of course how many miles you drive. But it should be about three 3 years!!How often do you change your transmission fluid + filter ? I lately been hearing once a year !?
My cousin owns a transmission shop and he said to follow what the manufacturer says, but told me if you change it every 15k miles, most transmissions will last for a long time. How often do you change your transmission fluid + filter ? I lately been hearing once a year !?
put it more the better, the cleaner the fluids are the better the performance of your machine lol. the only time it hurts the vehicle is if you don't change it and you go about 100,000 plus miles then its better to leave that fluid in there, sometime in high mileage cars the only thing holding it together is that Dirty fluid. like the guy at the top said 25,000 or three years both good numbers wich ever comes first.

the more you change the fluids the better even little particls of dirt and debry can ruin everything, you would be suprised what can stop a tranny or a engine.

if you want your car or truck suv whatever to run forever change your fluids before they need to be changed. you will be suprised how long your vehicle can run i had a 1990 nissan maxima with 300,000 miles and its still going today and everything is original down to the starter, and it still dynod at my school at the stock hp and torque.

take it from me buddy if you can afford to change it every year do it.How often do you change your transmission fluid + filter ? I lately been hearing once a year !?
me personally id change it every 30,000 you could get a year outta it but then you could also risk a chance of losing a transmission...preventive maintance is always a good idea....but then you could get lucky once a year but i wouldnt reccommend it...its your choice really...How often do you change your transmission fluid + filter ? I lately been hearing once a year !?
25000 is good. You can run it a little longer if you use synthetic or add an aux. cooler. How often do you change your transmission fluid + filter ? I lately been hearing once a year !?
I aim for the 24,000 mile mark. Sometimes it goes a bit beyond but that is not so critical as how you drive it. Extreme heat or cold take a toll on transmissions. I highly recommend synthetic fluid, it stays clean longer. It will cost more than standard but you get a higher level of protection.

Pulling a trailer or driving in dusty dirty terrain will be reason to change more often. How often do you change your transmission fluid + filter ? I lately been hearing once a year !?
DON'T GET IT MESSED UP MO PAR IS %26quot;MO PAR%26quot; .

    I'M FINISHED TALKING

VERY RELIABLEHow often do you change your transmission fluid + filter ? I lately been hearing once a year !?
My job is in heavy construction equipment and particularly hydraulic systems. You cannot keep hydraulics too clean, and that is all an automatic transmission control system is. No, oil does not wear out, but it gets dirty and the anti wear additives degrade.

Personally, I always add coolers to the transmissions, but I live in a hot area, and I do not like the standard filter, so WW Granger has a hydraualic filter, as does B%26amp;M, with replaceable spin on filters at 10 micron, or you could go to 3 micron. I add those to all my cars and change at 25,000 intervals. Personally, I cannot see the added benefit verses cost of synthetic over conventional. Have too much good luck with conventional oils. DO ADD a drain plug to your transmission pan, to make the job easier.

Ran the transmission in a K car over 275,000 miles and no failure ever. Have Suburban with the early 700R4 and HAD it rebuilt due to worry about it at 230,000 miles and the shop said he had NEVER heard of one at that mileage.

So my answer is YES, change it at 25,000 miles if you intend to keep the car a long time and don't forget the axle and power steering fluid.

Good LuckHow often do you change your transmission fluid + filter ? I lately been hearing once a year !?
the more often the better I guess. but you need to do the flush along with new filtr(s) I have a dodge ram and the book recomends 60000 for this service. Its expensive and well worth it as it is preventative maintenance. I have about 18,000 to go and I am currently saving money to have this done. How often do you change your transmission fluid + filter ? I lately been hearing once a year !?
The first place to look is in your vehicles owners manuel.Different vehicles have different schedules for changing your transmission filter and fluid.Use of vehicle can also effect how often if you have a truck and you use it for heavy work or are constantly towing a trailer every 20,000 miles would be a good time to change it.Different climates can also effect service intervals hot dusty desert verses a cooler non dusty enviroment. How often do you change your transmission fluid + filter ? I lately been hearing once a year !?
15K or every year (12 months) for severe duty, that is towing, mountain driving, stop and go, taxi, teen driver etc. most people and cars would benefit from a service sooner than later. For the majority of us 30K (2 years)would be adequate. Lets remember it is heat that kills hydraulic fluid performance, as the fluid degrades quickly and loss of lubrication will cause many problems. The modern automatic transmission/ transaxle needs protection from heat, and Chrysler had issues with airflow into the engine compartment. All chry.cars built after 1996 suffer from over temp. conditions, vans, and cars especially. BTW the intrepid class w/ 2.7L engines drop dead if synthetic oils are not used. Just ask an owner, they should have required this from day one. The engineers knew about this, but as usual Chry. bean counters figured it would be cheaper to deal with unhappy customers on a case by case basis rather than fixing the root cause, bad cooling due to lack of airflow. How often do you change your transmission fluid + filter ? I lately been hearing once a year !?
3 years or 30,000 miles is still the normal interval. if you change it once a year you may be wasting money, but you will have a transmission that will outlast most of the cars on the road. How often do you change your transmission fluid + filter ? I lately been hearing once a year !?

How do I check/change the transmission fluid on my 2000 Jaguar XJ Vanden Plas?

I have a 2000 Jaguar XJ Vanden Plas and would like to know how to check the transmission fluid if it needs to be changed and how to add more if necessary. How do I check/change the transmission fluid on my 2000 Jaguar XJ Vanden Plas?
Start engine, keeping transmission in park. Open the hood.

Near the back of your engine bay (close to the bottom of your windshield) should be a dipstick, probably with a red handle. This is your transmission fluid dipstick. You may or may not have to flip the handle up to pull it out of it's tube.

Pull out the dipstick, near the end of it should be some hashmarked areas with %26quot;Full%26quot; and %26quot;Add%26quot;. If it's at or near full, leave it alone. If it's just below full, and your engine hasn't warmed up yet, leave it alone. If it's at Add, look into your owners manual to see what kind of ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid) your Jag requires. Purchase it at your local auto parts store or dealership, along with a small funnell.

Again, with the engine running and transmission in park, remove your transmission dipstick, insert the funnell, and SLOWLY add the correct ATF. Maybe a fourth of a quart between inserting the dipstick all the way in and checking the level. When it's within the %26quot;full%26quot; zone, close it all up, and pat yourself on the back for having done something that most Jaguar owners simply leave to their butlers to do.How do I check/change the transmission fluid on my 2000 Jaguar XJ Vanden Plas?

Some trans. pans have drain plugs. If it does, remove plug and drain into a pan large enough to hold 8 quarts or more. If it doesn't have a drain plug, you will need to put your drain pan under one of the front corners and start removing the pan bolts in that corner working your way in both directions removing bolts till you reach the opposite corner. Next you need to remove the shift cable and bracket. The pan will come out between the cross-member and valve body with some effort. Remove the filter. If you buy an AC Delco filter,it will come with a new seal that pops in where the filter came out of,but if the seal didn't come out with removal of the filter than you don't need to change it. Push the filter up in place, make sure its seated all the way. The pan gasket is re-useable,just clean the pan and all sealing surfaces and put back in place. I don't have the torque spec. on the bolts but remember the gasket is rubber-don't overtighten. Put the shift cable and bracket back on,pull the dipstick, and put in 5 qts. dexron III. Start the engine, put your foot on the brake, run trans. through all the gears several times.Put in park and let engine run awhile, check fluid level a few times and add till its on the full cold mark. Drive it about 10 miles or so and check again(fluid expands) so check it several times to make sure level stays between full cold and full hot.How to change transmission fluid on 2004 gmc yukon?
Pay to have it done IMHO. Many shops have a flush machine to change all the fluid, if you do it yourself you wont be able to get it all out easily. This service is usually competitively priced so if you look around you should be able to get it done for a reasonable price. Its a pretty messy job unless you have a 3/4 ton with a 80 series or allison transmission, those have plugs so its slightly easier but you still only get whats in the pan. Much of the fluid is in the torque converter.

How often do i need to change my transmission fluid on my car?

What happens or kind of problems can i have in case I don't change it?? Thank youHow often do i need to change my transmission fluid on my car?
Every transmission is different. Some Ford transmissions require a fluid change every 30K miles. Other makes can go 60-100K.

Transmission run very hot. That degrades the fluid and it loses its lubricating ability and wears out the additives. The result is more wear and damage to the rubber seals.

Check your owner's manual for service recommendations or call the dealer.

Your owner's manual typically says every 30000 miles. The problem is that by the time the normal bright pink fresh fluid changes to the dark brown color (bad), it's too late to save your transmission from a certain death. So that's why you change the fluid before it chemically breaks down, just like engine coolant needs to be the original bright color when you change it every two years. How often do i need to change my transmission fluid on my car?

I was talking to a guy who claims to be a auto mechanic. He said i was ruining the parts int eh transmission by changing it every ten thousand miles! Please tell me something i don't know. How can I damage parts on the transmission when all I'm doing is draining the fluids and replacing the filter?I change my transmission fluid, and filter every ten thousand miles! Can that harm the transmission?
Waste of time and money. Nearly all late model cars use synthetic transmission fluid, that lasts at least 100,000 miles. Older cars that used %26quot;regular%26quot; trans fluid needed changing more often. It also depends upon how hard you work the transmission, like carrying a trailer, or carrying a full load inside the car/truck often. You risk more by changing the fluid more often, because it increase the risk that something can go wrong. Transmission fluids these days are nearly ALL car-specific. E.g., dexron-H is for honda, Dexron-T is for toyota. German cars use mineral oil based fluids that are synthetic. BE VERY CAREFUL about filter and fluid choices. READ the manual many times!!!I change my transmission fluid, and filter every ten thousand miles! Can that harm the transmission?
Changing the transmission fluid that often does more damage to the environment and your pocket book than anything else. Changing that often isn't going to harm the transmission, it's just wasteful. I have a 1993 Chevy 1/2T pickup. NEVER changed the fluid in 180,000 miles. NEVER had a problem either. I rest my case. My 1983 Suburban had 140,000 mi - never changed the fluid, never had a problem.

Follow your vehicle manufacturer's recommendations, not that of a mechanic. The mechanic is in it for the money. So is the manufacturer, but they are also in it for reliability and repeat customers.

However, if you do a lot of towing or steep mountain driving, then consider changing the fluid every 25,000 miles.I change my transmission fluid, and filter every ten thousand miles! Can that harm the transmission?
hi there no!!!! what you are doing want do any harm to your transmission it is just useless to do it . it is dangerous and it ruins transmission when you dont change your oil and filter for a long time and one day you decide it to do so ,all the mucky from oil deposit goes around in idraulic parts and that is it

ciaoI change my transmission fluid, and filter every ten thousand miles! Can that harm the transmission?
    yes

you can damage the transmission, if you are going to change the transmission fluid has to be minimum 100,000 miles. or if the oil is loosing his color because the fluid color is red.I change my transmission fluid, and filter every ten thousand miles! Can that harm the transmission?
You cant damage the transmission with simply changing the fluid and filter unless you are doing something wrong in the steps to change the fluid and filter. Most manufacturers recommend on older vehicles every 30,000 miles. If you go to a shop they can flush the transmission which does a better job at cleaning everything out but it often uses about 10 to 17 quarts to flush therefore the high price.

If you change yourself you are simply draining and usually are replacing 4 to 5 quarts or so. Therefore more frequent drains are recommend but 30,000 miles is typical. If you are concerned about some sediment etc then change the filter every 10,000 if you like. Cheaper and that will provide you the extra protection you are seeking without the cost of the full fluid and filter.

The transmisson is filled in the bottom. You need a special fill nozzle hooked to a gravity feed bottle. Also you need a factory scanner or VAG-COM to watch the temperature of the trans fluid. After you drain the fluid, you fill it until trans fluid dribbles out. Yes, the ATF filter is inside the tranny. Are you having problems with your transmission?

It is a more advance maintenance job, than your regular oil filter change. You will have to open it from the bottom pan.

The manual does not even have it scheduled on the book that it needs replacement.

See link at the bottom to get more ideas. How do i get to and change the transmission fluid filter on a 2000 honda civic dx?
Drop the transmission and pop it open. The Automatic transmissions if equipped with a filter it will be an internal filter unlike manual transmissions like mine that don't even have one. You shouldn't worry about the filter unless you have problems, Auto tranny's are pretty complicated and any transmission you pull apart can be difficult to fix if you don't know what you're doing. Try doing some other maintenance like replacing the fuel filter, replacing/gapping new spark plugs, install some new plug wires, whatever routine maintenance you can think of.

I know what you mean though lol, sometimes I just wanna work on my car so I'll go and inspect and if I see even the slightest issue I'll replace the part or do whatever's needed. But a good thing to do whether or not you access the filter is to change the transmission fluid, a lot of people only change the oil so tranny fluid gets neglected.

If your car or truck is new? in the owners manual you will find a chart that the manufacturer has set as a %26quot;guideline%26quot; to basic maintenance. However with age, mileage and severity of use, this guideline may find its way out the window.

Even with medium duty and heavy duty trucks I work on, I see 30,000 to 50,000 miles between automatic transmission fluid and filter changes so with an everyday driver I could see you getting 50,000 miles to 75,000 miles without problem. Again if this vehicle has high mileage or has severe duty use? you will have to adjust your change intervals accordingly.

The balance of all this is that periodic maintenance %26quot;extends%26quot; the life of the vehicle maximizing your useful value of the vehicle. If you are changing fluids and doing repairs costing more than the value of the vehicle itself? it may be time for a newer / fewer mileage vehicle.

Price for oil and transmission fluid change?

does anyone know about how much it would cost to get my oil and filter and transmission fluid and filter changed at an oil change place? its a 2000 chevy impala 3.8 v6. front wheel drivePrice for oil and transmission fluid change?
What ever you do request a transmission fluid and filter change, not a flush. Cars with over 50,000 miles on the odometer should never go for a flush and no filter change. A crankcase oil and filter change AND a transmission filter and filter change shouldn't cost over $165.00 at any new car dealer.

The person who said a transmission flush (no filter) would cost $85.00 apparently hasn't had one lately.Price for oil and transmission fluid change?
Look to see if you have a FireStone in your area. Even a walmart w/ service center. Or just get a friend to do the oil change it is soooo easy, look it up at autozone.com. I've never gone to the shop for that but if it is less than $30, I'd say go for it, because the oil and filter alone will cost you abt $20, so it'll be worth it.Price for oil and transmission fluid change?
An oil change on that car is simple. Cost should be $20-25.

A trans flush, where they pump out the old fluid and pump in fresh stuff, runs around $60-80 depending on the shop doing the work.

  • How much Would it cost to change transmission fluid, motor oil, a battery, and front brake pads and rotors?

    Hi,

My car is 01 Hyundai Sonata.

I recently had a car check up and the precision tune auto shop recommended me to get new ceramic brake pads and rotors and change the transmission oil, motor oil, brake fluid and the battery.

For those works, how much SHOULD it cost for me?, meaning what's the normal price range for the job?

They wanted $640. Do you think that cost makes sense?

I live in Northern California, near San Jose.

I'd appreciate your answers. Thank youHow much Would it cost to change transmission fluid, motor oil, a battery, and front brake pads and rotors?
Parts cost is about $60 for pads, $150 for rotors, $20 for tranny fluid, $20 for oil/filter, $10 for brake fluid and $85 for battery prior to labor you already are at $350, so 4.5 hours to do the job seems very good. Now, if you need all this work I don't know, I suggest getting a second opinion and compare with the scheduled maintenance list for your car and follow that. Tranny fluid every 30K, oil/filter 5K, rest of items as needed. How much Would it cost to change transmission fluid, motor oil, a battery, and front brake pads and rotors?
I would say that is on the high end.

I would say that the most expensive things they are hitting you for are the pad and rotors, and the battery. These auto shops have most consumers accustomed to paying high prices for brake jobs, when in fact they are cheap (strictly speaking about changing the pads and rotars, not the ABS system, etc...).

The battery I'm guessing shouldn't cost over $65. You could do that yourself.

I would try to find a shop that would do it for under $450. How much Would it cost to change transmission fluid, motor oil, a battery, and front brake pads and rotors?
Well under $200 with quality parts if you do it your self. It's really easy stuff.

1990 740 Volvo Overdrive sticks, how do I change transmission fluid?

    Hello,

I have a 1990 740 that has about 227,000 miles on it. Recently replaced the fuel pump and a week later, though it functions normally in the city, when I take the car onto the freeway, it will run in the overdrive gear instead of Drive.

I checked the relay behind the ashtray, it looks fine.

The mechanic where I usually take my car told me over the phone that it could be a kickback cable; however, when I looked in a Chilton service manual, there was no mention of a kickback cable anywhere.

If I change the transmission oil will that be a good start to eliminating my troubleshooting options? Can anyone explain to me the procedure for changing transmission oil? Is it just a matter of draining the fluid and replacing it?

Any other troubleshooting advise would help alot. Thanks.1990 740 Volvo Overdrive sticks, how do I change transmission fluid?
The overdrive relays are very problematic, as well as the kick-down cables. With the vehicle stopped you should be able to activate and deactivate the O/D relay, if it is sticking, try tapping on the relay while depressing the button, if it starts working, then the relay is bad. very very common!1990 740 Volvo Overdrive sticks, how do I change transmission fluid?

And that is the way it should work. Why do you see that as a problem? Once you are over a certain speed, it is supposed to shift into overdrive which also gives you better fuel economy.

If it's a manual, bring it to a auto shop. They'll know where to do that. If it's an automatic, there will be a place to check the fluid underneath the hood. That's where you will add the fluid.Does anyone know how to change the transmission fluid in a 151-A2 Ford Mutt Army Jeep?

    Change Transmission Fluid?

I bought a 1997 Ford F250 HD with a 7.3 powerstroke that had about 215k miles on it. the transmission sometimes shifts hard and i don't know if changeing the fluid might help . can anyone instruct me on changing the fluid on an E4OD. ( I know how to check the level)Change Transmission Fluid?
When changing the transmission fluid from just the pan, only a little bit of transmission fluid is changed. Change the fluid completely by doing a complete drain and refill. You can do this yourself at the radiator transmsison lines. Do a search on the web for transmission flush.Change Transmission Fluid?
changing the fluid and filter might help the shifting, especially if the filter is dirty.Change Transmission Fluid?
Don't mess with the fluid unless you know that it has been changed at 30th. mile intervals. If you change the fluid after all 215K miles you will mess up the tranny.

Depends on the car. Your owner's manual will tell you when to change it.By how many miles are you supposed to change your transmission fluid?
Automatic, every 50 thousand, stick, never.By how many miles are you supposed to change your transmission fluid?
It can be very subjective, as follows:-

    Refer to Owner's Handbook guideline

If none because it is a used car, search the internet for the manufacturer's guide

Do-It-Yourself:- Check the colour of the transmission oil. If it is clear, not opaque, black, brown, red, or colours, looks different from new engine oil. Drain it off and replenish with the the specified grade transmission oil (different grade to manual and automatic transmission)

Caution: avoid the suck out hand pump method for evacuating the existing transmission oil (beside sludge, there can be solid residue at the bottom of the gearboxBy how many miles are you supposed to change your transmission fluid?
Change your transmission fluid around every 50,000 miles as well as check to, when you see that it's brownish red instead of clean dark red it's starting to heat up and wear out. remember your transmission fluid is not only a lubricant it is also a detergent to help keep it's moving part's clean and running smoothly. happy motoring. By how many miles are you supposed to change your transmission fluid?
Look for the manufacturers maintenance manual and vehicle maintenance schedules. Do Not rely on just a figure of miles, all cars and trucks are different. How the car or truck is driven and if it is a duty vehicle applies as well. ie service driven.

Some require shorter tune up schedules.By how many miles are you supposed to change your transmission fluid?

Visit your Chrysler/Dodge dealer and have them flush the transmission. The dealer is the only place that will take of the tranny if their flush causes it to quit working. My Chrysler T%26amp;C has 79k+mi. I need to change transmission fluid. Should I do it myself, if so, how?
Go to jiggy lube they will do it for about $80. You can do it ourself but you won't remove all the old fluid. Mybe just 2/3, Jiffy lube or a reasonable fax simily has a system that will flush the old fluid and replace it with new.My Chrysler T%26amp;C has 79k+mi. I need to change transmission fluid. Should I do it myself, if so, how?
If the dealership is going to use a transmission fluid changing machine, the cost is worth it. If they are just going to drop the pan and change the fluid and filter you can probably get that done for half the cost. It is important to change all the fluid including the fluid in the converter. Some vehicles have a converter drain plug and some do not. Transmission fluid changing is a messy job, and you have to dispose of the fluid in an environmentally sound manner. If your converter does have a drain plug and you do have an hour to kill, get yourself a big drain pan and a case of trans fluid($25?). Drop the pan, change the filter($20?) Reinstall the pan with the new gasket, do not over tighten the bolts! Drain the torque converter, reinstall the drain plug. Put only five or six quarts in, start the car for 5-10 seconds then turn off again. Put 5 more quarts of the fluid in, start the car, checking the dipstick periodically after the 9th or 10th quart add more fluid till it's at the full hot mark, Check for leaks and road test the vehicle. Don't forget to check reverse. My Chrysler T%26amp;C has 79k+mi. I need to change transmission fluid. Should I do it myself, if so, how?
It depends what they are going to do. If they drop the pan change the screen and then flush it with a machine than 129 isnt bad. If they are just going to flush t, which is the better of the 2, then that is too much. I do it at my shops for $89 on a chrysler. Just make sure wherever you take it they are using the right fluid. It should take ATF+3 or pennzoil makes a fluid called multi-vehiocle. Dont let someone do it and use regular dexron III.

When to change transmission fluid and filter-2006 Honda Accord?

I just bought a used 2006 Honda Accord Ex Coupe l4 with Auto. Trans.

It has 40500 miles on it. The Owner's Manual says to change the automatic transmission fluid initially at 60,000 miles for severe use, and every 30,000 thereafter. I don't drive that way, mostly just short trips to the local store and back, so when should the tranny fluid be changed under normal use? Also, is there a tranny fluid filter to be changed at the same time?

How many miles between engine oil and filter changes are recommended?

This is my first Honda. I used to be a GM car buyer.

    Thank You In Advance,

DaveWhen to change transmission fluid and filter-2006 Honda Accord?
I just hit 80k miles and am going to change the trans fluid for the first time. Make sure you spend the extra money and buy the official Honda Trans fluid for your car. Don't buy a substitute at the auto store. Honda's are extremely sensitive to the trans fluid formulation.

As far as engine oil, I try to change the oil and filter every 3000 miles. A couple of times I didn't get around to it until 4 or 5000 miles - no big deal. The brand isn't that important in this case, just be sure to use the correct viscosity oil. Most of the newer Hondas require 5W-10 or 20. Check the sticker under the hood.

If you do reasonable maintenance like this and drive sensibly, most Hondas will last for several hundred thousand miles. However, Hondas are very fragile and do not hold up well at all under abusive circumstances. When to change transmission fluid and filter-2006 Honda Accord?
Honda is correct, fluid should be replaced at 60k unless you drive under severe conditions, which includes short trips where the petroleum-based fluid doesn't heat up sufficiently to rid it of water and other contaminants.change it now and every 30k miles after that and don't listen to old school folks who never changed their atf- every manufacturer has recommendations on service intervals and you should follow them - it's cheaper than a transmission.and make sure you use honda atf, it's manufacturer-specific.When to change transmission fluid and filter-2006 Honda Accord?
Transmission fluid doesn't wear out or get dirty under normal conditions. If you tow something heavy or got stuck and abused the tranny, and the fluid looks or smells burned, then change it. I have owned automatics of various makes for 40 years and never changed transmission fluid on any of them and only once had a transmission problem and that was on a 79 Chrysler with only 30,000 miles. My 06 Toyota has a band on the transmission dip stick stating that under normal conditions the fluid does not need to be changed. Honda is just appeasing its dealers so they can get the service work. Oil and filter changes make sense at 5000 miles unless you do a lot of short trip driving where the engine seldom gets fully warmed up. Then do them at 3000 miles. When to change transmission fluid and filter-2006 Honda Accord?
congrads on the honda they are very dependable cars. ok i recomend that you sevice the transmission at 60 k and dont just change the filter and the 5 qrts go to a shop that has a machine to flush all the fluid. which is about 12 qrts and a filter, this is the best thing you can have done and make sure they use the correct fluid hondas are very picky when it comes to their fluids. as for the engine oil 3 months or 3 thousand miles. good luck and take care of your new ride

I wanted to change the transmission fluid in my 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix. How hard is this.?

I wanted to disconnect the transmission line to the radiator, cut the car on, and pump out the old fluid. I did this on my '85 Buick and I haven't had any problems...can this method be sucessful on the Pontiac?I wanted to change the transmission fluid in my 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix. How hard is this.?
I do it by getting a white 5 gallon bucket and marking the level on the side in 1 quart increments. Then you run the car till you've pumped 1 quart into the bucket, cut the engine, add a quart and do it again till you've replaced all the fluid.

The return line just dumps into the pan, so you need to drop the pan, clean it out and fill it with new fluid first. That will keep the new fluid from the flush from mixing with the old fluid in the pan.

Don't forget to plug the return line to the transmission while you're flushing. And make sure you disconnect the return line from the radiator to the transmission to put in the bucket so you flush the cooler out too.I wanted to change the transmission fluid in my 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix. I would think that as long as the car were in neutral, you shouldn't have a problem. However, there are things about that where I am unsure. you cant be serious... why would you even think of running a transmission dry of fluid... what do you think lubricates it? jeezI wanted to change the transmission fluid in my 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix. How hard is this.?

Yes use a flush machine that's the trick.I wanted to change the transmission fluid in my 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix. How hard is this.?
I wouldn't suggest it. When you change the transmission fluid, it is just like changing the motor oil in the sense that your tranny has a filter just like your motor. When you change the fluid you need to change the filter also. To do this, you will need to drop the transmission oil pan to have access to the filter. Changing the fluid without changing the fluid is kind of pointless since your filter will get to the point where it can no longer filter out material and you will be pumping dirty fluid through your transmission.

Also it is not a smart idea to run your car and pump the fluid out, you could burn up your transmission and or torque converter.I wanted to change the transmission fluid in my 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix. How hard is this.?
Put the tools down and slowly step away from the vehicle sir.

Take it to a shop and let a mechanic do it right. I'm sure you don't want to spend $2000 for a new transmission.I wanted to change the transmission fluid in my 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix. How hard is this.?
I understand what you want to do. Here it is, step-by-step. Includes dropping the pan, changing the filter, cleaning and reinstalling the pan and filling with fluid-- then having a partner start the engine to pump the fluid out of the the cooler line. The key is you add fresh fluid as the old is being pumped out-- the transmission never runs dry this way. http://www.amsoil.com/faqs/ATF_and_Filte

I did this when I switched to synthetic ATF. http://www.amsoil.com/redirect.cgi?zo=14

Easiest way to change transmission fluid?

I have 2 vehicles, 1 @ 52k miles (05 Sable), 1 @ 126k miles (02 Stratus), and the transmission fluid has never been changed in either one. I have never done this before, but I have enough know-how to figure it out. However, I do have some questions for someone with more experience than myself.

    1. I have heard that it is not wise to change the tran. fluid in the 126k car because it can cause stuff to fail due to the length of time it has had the same fluid in it. is this true?

    2. What is the easiest and/or best way to extract the transmission fluid and what tools do I need? (I have heard that sliding a tube through the dipstick tube and siphoning/pumping it out is the best way)

    3. Planning to switch to ROYAL PURPLE. Is there something better?

FYI, I can't afford to put these vehicles in the shop to have this done, and I want the best bang for the buck (thus the Synthetic fluid). Please gear the answers away from %26quot;just take them to the dealership.%26quot;Easiest way to change transmission fluid?
Servicing a transmission will not hurt it, people only say that because they notice the transmission acting up, then have it serviced just before it actually fails.

Using the wrong fluid can ruin a transmission.

Both vehicles would benefit more having the filter replaced as well (especially the higher mileage one).

The Stratus transmission pan is sealed to the transmission with rtv especially designed for this use, it will seem to be glued in place.

I take all but 2 bolts out leaving the last 2 slightly loosened and hit the pan from the side with a rubber dead blow hammer to break the bond, you will know when it is coming loose because it will start to leak (have a wide drain pan ready under it).

Make sure when you replace the filter that there is only one o-ring in place, also the transmission will continue to drip from the differential so it is best to let it set for awhile because you want a clean dry surface for the rtv to seal to when you put the clean dry pan back on.

Expect to use about 5q of atf +4 and recheck after you drive because the dif. will fill as slowly as it drained.

As for the Mercury, I'm not to sure about the quirks with that one.Easiest way to change transmission fluid?
1 the vehicle with 126,000 miles just drop the transmission fluid pan and install a new filter and that won't hurt it one bit, it will actually help it.

2 do the same with your second vehicle as your not going to get all the fluid out of the tranny as over half of the fluid is in the torque converter and there is no drain plug on the converter on most cars so your idea of adding synthetic fluid to it is also shot down as you can't mix synthetic with regular tranny fluid.Easiest way to change transmission fluid?
not wise to flush is wise to replace it but even then doesnt have to do it most cars if drove right 300,000 plus miles easy my car has over 380,000 never been touch yet

just drain it and replace filter all you really need better to have it done since its a mess

but its not hard just a few bolts

can suck it out but you cant replace filter

any type of fluid is fine but sure any Synthetic is better

and ever go to dealerships unless its free any shop can do just as good as a dealership plus cheaperEasiest way to change transmission fluid?
Don't laugh, but the easiest way is to drill a 3/16%26quot; hole at the low point of the pan to drain it out. It's easy to plug the hole afterwards with a 1/4%26quot; self tapping screw plus fiber washer (add a little lock-tite to be sure).Easiest way to change transmission fluid?
You %26quot;MIGHT%26quot; be okay with the 05 sable, but I wouldn't advise it. It's the fresh detergent in the new fluid that will retire the adhesive bonding the friction material to the clutch disks. I don't know why companies don't offer low detergent fluid, but they don't. I've been a mechanic for over 20 years, so I've seen this a hundred times.

Yes, the easiest and cleanest way to remove the trans fluid is through a small hose down the dipstick tube, but no matter what method you employ, you cannot remove the fluid (2%26amp;1/2 qts) in the torque converter. No matter how good the new fluid is it will be mixing with stuff that has 126000 miles on it. My advise is save your money, and don't even think of that crap in a can! Nothing can fix any damage that's already been done. Good luck!Easiest way to change transmission fluid?
FORGET Royal Purple. When you read the bottle, it actually has no recommended car-makers listed. It is NOT true that changing the fluid at high mileage will cause an instant melt-down. There are many variables involved here. The trans pan must be dropped to change the trans filter and pan gasket. Wash whateer you see with brake cleaner spray. This removes graphite (clutch droppings). CLean the bottom of the trans pan, re-install it, and top up the fluid. USE ONLY fluid that states %26quot;designed for use in Ford cars%26quot; in the sable. Use ONLY fluid that states %26quot;designed for use in Chrysler cars%26quot; in the other. REALIZE that your transmission holds MANY quarts of old fluid in the vlave body and in the torque converter. You can ONLY improve the concentration of old to new fluid by changing the fluid only. You MUST do a flush and fill afterwards. This requires expensive equipment to accomplish. CALL several dealerships to see if they are running specials on this service. They WILL use the proper fulids, and the proper techniques to get the job done CORRECTLY. PLUS, you will get a receipt with some kind of warranty on it. The only transmissions I know of that require only a fluid changing are in some Honda cars. Trans fluids today are car-maker specific. NEVER use a generic fluid. All later model cars use synthetic trans fluid from the factory. Dino based fluids are a thing of the past. When you do this job the right way, car neurosis is reduced. Good luck!!Easiest way to change transmission fluid?
on the 126K leave it alone on the sable pull down trans pan stating at the pass side run up one side then the other leave the 4 bolts on the back end one at a time the fluid should be just starting to drain out if not use a screw driver and don't pry to hard and the pan will come down yes you might make a mess when down to last bolt try to hold pan and remove bolt at same time the pan gasket you see m should be black if it is it's a reusable gasket when you pull down the filter you will see a green boot stuck up it the opening that must come out you can use small screw driver to do this just make sure you do ot disturb any thing in that area the new filter will have the boot on it put a little oil on it and push it up in place clean all rust off the outside corners of the pan and put everything back as far as fluid use the ford fluid because you will not be able to get all fluid out of the trans because there is no way to get it out of the torque convertor still will be several quarts in there so you do not want two different fluids in the trans add 5 qts then start top off and recheckEasiest way to change transmission fluid?
    Here's the deal:

If the fluid is burnt (it will be brown) or has a lot of metal in it (when you wipe the dipstick on a paper towel there will be silver on the towel) then you need a rebuild, changing the fluid will cause it to slip.

To change the fluid, put the car on jackstands if it is to low to get under, then raise your floor jack just up to the bottom of the trans. oil pan (touching it, not exerting any force). Have cardboard under the car, this can make a big mess if it doesn't go well. Un-bolt it, SLOWLY let it down then grab it and dump it in your container (check again for metal). Then put a couple quarts in it, raise it back up, get it to be full then start the engine, get it warm and keep checking the fluid level and add as necessary.

As for switching the fluid, I'm not sure about what the procedure would be. I don't think it would be a big deal but I honestly don't know.

Hope this helps!Easiest way to change transmission fluid?
1 - Not true - check quality of trans fluid, at that mileage it will be dark already, fluid change will be good for it, (think about it, if its true, then when will it be changed). Just make sure to use same type and grade of fluid. Now the other car may still be good at 52k, check the fluid if its red or pinkish and is still very transparent then its still good.

2 - The best way is the only way I would recommend, put the vehicle on stands and go under, remove the drain bolt. This way you will get almost every single drop of the old fluid. Sliding a tube doesnt not work all the time, and still leaves some of the old fluid. Now for filling the trans fluid, its a little hard to use a pump from underneath, also you dont know if its full until it spills out of the fill hole which could be messy. You can use the dip stick tube to fill it up, it will be slow and you have to keep it in check how much you have put in and make sure not to overfill it.

3 - Royal Purple is great, but I tend to stick to what the vehicle manufacturer recommends. I find it overkill, unless its for high performance.

Jack the vehicle up, unbolt the transmission plug on the transmission pan(it's going to be somewhere in the front because it is FWD). You should also change the filter and gasket while you are in there. It looks like a thick flat plastic case with a tube running up into the transmission. After you have drained everything and changed the filter (you might want to wait a little while for it to drain) bolt it back up and add the fluid into the transmission fluid tube under the hood. DO NOT POUR IT IN THE OIL TUBE! they look similar. Good luck.

P.S.- when you change your transmission fluid, you do not change all of it, there is still some old fluid in the transmission. It is better for the car (especially if it has high milage) if you take it to a shop to have them do a full system flush. It is more expensive but if you think your car needs it, it's worth it in the long run.

The fluid should be drained immediately after the vehicle has been driven. This will remove any built up sediment better than if the fluid were cold. Because of this it's a good idea to wear protective gloves (fluid temperature can exceed 350-degrees f in a hot transmission )After the vehicle has been driven to warm up the fluid raise it and place it on jackstands for access underneath.Make sure it is firmly supported by the four stands placed under the frame rails. place the drain pan under the transmission oil pan and remove the oil pan bolts along the rear and sides of the pan . Loosen but do not remove the bolts at the front of the pan . Carefully pry the pan down at the rear allowing the hot fluid to drain into the drain pan . If necessary use a screwdriver to break the gasket seal at the rear of the pan however do not damage the pan or transmission in the process .Support the pan and remove the remaining bolts at the front of the pan .Lower the pan and drain the remaining fluid into the drain receptacle. As this is done check the fluid for metal particles which may be indication of transmission failure. Now visible on the bottom of the transmission is the filter/strainer held in place by screws Remove the screws the filter and the gasket. On E4OD transmission remove the filter by carefully pulling and rotating it as necessary (note)make sure the o-ring seal is not in the filter pick up bore .If it is remove and discard it. Thoroughly clean the transmission oil pan with solvent . inspect for metal particles and foreign matter .Dry with compressed air if available .It is important that all remaining gasket material be remove from the oil pan mounting flange . Use a gasket scraper or putty knife for this Clean the filter mounting surface on the valve body again this surface should be smooth and free of old gasket material . Place the new filter into position with a new gasket between it and the transmission valve body . Install the mounting screws and tighten them to the torque value listed. On E4OD transmission lubricate the new filter o-ring with transmission fluid and press the filter and seal assembly into the transmission bore. Apply a bead of RTV sealant around the oil pan mounting surface with the sealant to the inside of the bolt holes . Press the new gasket into place on the pan making sure all bolt holes line up Lift the pan up to the bottom of the transmission and install the mounting bolts tighten the bolts in a diagonal fashion working around the pan . Using a torque wrench tighten the bolts to the torque specifications Lower the vehicle off the jackstandsHow to change the transmission fluid on a 1991 ford probe?
If you take it to a shop they just suck the fluid out through the fill tube.

If you do it you have to remove all the bolts from the pan on the bottom.

Replace or clean the filter and put a new gasket on.

Do not over tighten the bolts when reinstalling or the gasket will push out the side and leekHow to change the transmission fluid on a 1991 ford probe?

How do I change the transmission fluid in a 325i BMW?

My car is leaking something but people say my oil is always good. But I believe it is transmission fluid and that it needs to be changed.Because my car doesn't want to go sometimes.

Thanks! How do I change the transmission fluid in a 325i BMW?
You can take it to quite a few oil change centers that will pump the old fluid and replace it with new.We are talking about an automatic trans here, right?I sometimes disconnect a transmission coolant line at the radiator, start the engine, and pump it completely dry, then refill. It's really the best way.And there are additives from the auto parts store that when added to the trans fluid will swell the rubber seals and stop leaks.Good luck to you and have a nice day,Wildman

How do I change the transmission fluid on my car?

I mean I know how you do it but I've never done it before or to my car. I have a 95 geo metro with an automatic transmission. How much transmission fluid should I put in it before I crank it up to check the fluid? Also do you have to have it on flat ground when changing the coil? I ask cause my car sits real low and all I have is two ramps. How do I change the transmission fluid on my car?
Get the car up onto the ramps, undo the 30 or so bolts that holds the pan onto the transmission. Watch out, there is a LOT of fluid.

Wash the pan clean and then have ready the new filter that sits inside the transmission housing. Refit the pan and fill up with bout 15 to 20 quarts of transmission fluid. Read the book to tell how much exactly to put in.How do I change the transmission fluid on my car?
that pan only holds about 3 quarts the full transmission holds about 8 if i remember right. there is a drain plug in the pan if you want to drain out some of the old, that would be my recommendation given the year and presumed mileage.

How does a car act when it is low on transmission fluid?

I have a 02 imapala that is pulling after every stop and almost feels like its going into neutral when I am driving. I have to press hard on the gas to get it to go after stopping.

    No Service engine light on.

    Just had a tune up.

Always up to date with my oil changes.

Service traction light has been on but I don't think it has anything to do with that. Lights been on for sometime and this has barely started up.How often do you change your transmission fluid and what are the results if it is not changed?
should change it every 12 mths or 30 000 kms . the fluid becomes thin and contamenated which causes an auto valve body to block up which makes the shift rough and also lacks powerHow often do you change your transmission fluid and what are the results if it is not changed?
the traction control light can be transmission related, it can also be a speed sensor problem, but that would set a code in the computer. the transmission should be serviced by the maintenance schedule. i believe that yours is due every either 15,000 or 50,000 miles. skipping that will cause transmission failure in the long run . if it is slipping i would check the fluid level first, and correct that f it is low, after that see where the leak is. it might be time to get into a shop.

How do I change the transmission fluid on a 2003 toyota corolla?

While changing my oil, a friend mistakenly drained the transmission fluid instead, not noting how much was drained. So now I had to buy the Toyota T-IV transmission fluid and added about 1.5 qts of it already, and it's up to the %26quot;cold%26quot; notch on the dipstick (I added when the engine was cold). Is this the correct procedure? Shouldn't it be more than 1.5 qts? Should I just add up to the 3 qts that i've heard people do when doing a a drain/refill, or should i just leave it at 1.5 qts? Also should is it ok to check when cold, or should i warm it up first and then check? Your help is appreciated. How do I change the transmission fluid on a 2003 toyota corolla?
yes, do the above, just a warning if you're doing it your first time, add little by little by little...even in 1/4 quarts increments or less if you have to. and yes, make sure the car is running when you check the level. How do I change the transmission fluid on a 2003 toyota corolla?
run the car for at least 10 minutes, and shift from drive to neutral to reverse a few times while it's warming up. you can test the fluid while the car is in park, but running.

It MUST be warmed up to determine the correct level.

Add the fluid through the dipstick hole using a funnel. How do I change the transmission fluid on a 2003 toyota corolla?
1.5 is ok for now but make sure that your engine is running when you check it on the dip stick. If it is below the fill line then just add a half quart. Repeat this process until it is at the level specified on the dip stick. Remeber....engine must be running before you check (hot or cold). start it ,,and let it warm completely up,,and check it when it is hot,,at normal operating temperature,,and only add small amounts at a time,,don't over fill it,,this will cause major damage to it,,if you do,,and check it a bunch of times to make sure it is right,,i own a repair shop,,and do this type work all the time,,just make sure you have it back up to where it goes,,and it will be fine,,your not the only one who has done this,,so don't worry,,you ha vent hurt anything at all,,good luck,,,i hope this help,s.

Im broke.I need to know how to change transmission fluid, detailed please.?

my trans fluid is bad, and how do I change itIm broke.I need to know how to change transmission fluid, detailed please.?
Warm the car to close to normal temperature

Lift the car on a jack and stands to get better access

Get a large and wide drain pan to collect the fluid

If automatic you will need to take the pan off. Get the proper socket and undo all the bolts on the pan and slowly let the fluid seep out. Sometimes there is a drain plug that you can undo. If it's a manual tranny you will have two bolts: a drain and a fill. Undo the top one (fill) first. It's much better than realizing you've drained all the fluid and can't get the fill plug open.

Let all the fluid drain. If automatic replace the pan with new gasket. Make sure to clean the magnet at bottom of pan.

tighten up all bolts to spec and add the amount of fluid you took out via the transmission dipstick. Make sure your are using the right fluid! Check owners manual if in doubt.

If your car is manual you will need the correct gear oil. The owners manual will have the details. Same with automatic, fill the tranny up with the amount that you took out. Usually with a manual transmission you fill it up until the fluid starts to drip out the fill plug. With an automatic start the car up and let it idle. Go through all the gear ranges: PRND21 ending in Park. Lift the dipstick and wipe it clean. Check and correct the level if necessary. With a simple drain and refill you won't be able to get all the fluid out from the torque converter. A flush will give you better results. When changing the fluid it makes sense to also change the filter (Automatic only). Make sure to check the fluid in a few days and to also look for any leaks.Im broke.I need to know how to change transmission fluid, detailed please.?
try autozone.com they have step by step and pics just enter the make and year of your car good luck.Im broke.I need to know how to change transmission fluid, detailed please.?
same as the oil.. there shoudl be a drain plug on it somewhere. take the plug out, drain into a bucket or something, put the plug in and dump the right amount of transmission fluid in it from the fill tube under the hood.. take the fluid to a lube place and see if they will recycle it for you.Im broke.I need to know how to change transmission fluid, detailed please.?
First, get the proper amount of fluid from the auto parts store, along with a drain pan that will hold that amount of fluid, and a new filter and seal kit. In most cases, you will need to loosen the pan bolts on the bottom of the transmission, but don't completely remove them. When you get them loose, locate a corner on the pan and only remove 6-8 of the bolts completely. Then loosen the rest of the bolts, moving away from the corner. That will allow you to drain the fluid from that corner, draining it into the pan (otherwise, you will have a big mess, and nothing in the pan). Once you remove the pan, wipe out the inside of it with a CLEAN cloth, looking for any small pieces of metal (that would be a sign of bigger problems). Also, look at the oil removed from the trans for darkening, or an unusual odor (ex. a burnt smell, or a brownish tint). After inspection, replace the filter and gasket (instructions should be in the kit). Then refill with the recommended amount of fluid, start the car, put it into gear, and wait for the trans and engine to warm up. Check for leaks, and make sure the trans is filled up, but not overfull. In 7-10 days, re tighten the pan bolts, as they will loosen up a little. Most auto parts stores have a tank for used oil disposal, usually for free.Im broke.I need to know how to change transmission fluid, detailed please.?
Disconnect the pressure line from the radiator and slip a long rubber line over it leading to a bucket.Start the engine and let it run until all the fluid is pumped out. This will remove the fluid more completely than draining the pan because it will also empty the torque converter.

If your trans is the type without a dipstick, look for a plug in the case to remove to show the level.

Is it easy to change the transmission fluid on my 1996 Mustang GT?

I have a 1996 Automatic Mustang GT. I do not know much about cars, but I can change the oil myself. If it is easy to change the transmission fluid, I would rather do that, than spend a lot of money at a dealer. If someone could let me know how hard it is to do I would really appreciate it. ThanksIs it easy to change the transmission fluid on my 1996 Mustang GT?
The only thing that you could do yourself is replace the transmission filter (located inside the trans. pan). Its recommended that you replace this filter every time you service the transmission, which is described in your owners manual. Also, most late model Fords come with a reusable trans. pan gasket which may only need to be replaced if it is messed up while dropping the pan down. Other than that, sorry to say that changing %26quot;all%26quot; of the trans. fluid will need to be done by a service shop with a machine specifically used for that purpose. I managed a shop of my own and did many transmission services like the one you need. It varies in cost but you don't need to go to a dealership to do it. We charged around $80 for the service with the filter replacement. Some places might try to tell you that the filter doesn't need to be replaced and replacing it may cause problems down the road. I've heard it all before and trust me, filters are there and need to be replaced for a reason. If you can find a shop that will let you watch while they service it, look inside the pan after they remove it. If its been a while since its been serviced, it should have a nice black coating on the bottom of the pan as well as a magnet that should be covered with debris from engine components. Make sure they clean it out well, and definitely make sure they replace the filter if your paying an upcharge for it. I hope this helps you.Is it easy to change the transmission fluid on my 1996 Mustang GT?
It is a little more complicated that an oil change, but find a service shop the can drain it all buy pumping it out, they get it all, If you do it you can not drain the torque converter it still hold a quart of old trans fluid. Get a deep sump pan installed, change the fluid then and you sill have a drain valve/screw then and you can do it yourself. Is it easy to change the transmission fluid on my 1996 Mustang GT?
it's as easy as taking the oil pan off. i recommend replacing the pan to one with a drain plug so next time its much easier and less messy. best bet is to leave bolts in one end and tilt pan down to drain it. change the filter and you'll need about 6-8 quarts of fluid. the torque convertor holds another 8 if you drain it. some of those have a plug. take the behousing cover off and rotate the engine till you find a plug on the converter accessable thru a hole in the flex plate( the disc with the ring gear on it that the starter turns)remove the plug to drain it.Is it easy to change the transmission fluid on my 1996 Mustang GT?
about the sam eas oil change just more screws to remove and a little more mess... but easy tip dont remove all bolts remove a few and break loose the seal and let it drain some and dont over tighten the bolts when your replacing

Do I need to change my transmission fluid on my 2006 Mitsubishi Galant?

It must be slow at Jippy Lubed....

Whiles Yes you can change your tranny fluid, you have a ways to go. Wait till 60k and then change it. OH.. you can do it yourself. It's a simple drain and fill with ATF +4.

you probably need about 3 quarts

There is NO transmission filter element to be replaced either.

The filter is simply a mesh screen that is only replaced IF the transmission is physically removed for servicing.

you can do the job easily yourself.

but $100 is too much money for a simple drain and refill. the whole job would take literally 15 minutes.Do I need to change my transmission fluid on my 2006 Mitsubishi Galant?
what does your owners manual say? it'll probably have a range from 30-60k. 60k is if you drive only on the hwy at 55 mph and the temperature never goes above 80 or below 40, you don't tow and don't drive through mountains.

your owners manual will say that tough driving is any start and stop, short trips (under 10 minutes), driving at high speeds (usually defined as over 60), driving in extreme weather (meaning hot or cold), driving in dusty conditions, towing, driving through mountains or under a load. if you do more than 3 of those things they want you to use the shorter intervals listed.

as for dealers, most of them are trying to sell services too and so will give you the shortest change intervals possible.Do I need to change my transmission fluid on my 2006 Mitsubishi Galant?
Jiffy lube is trying to make a sale. Check with the manufacturers Scheduled maintenance intervals and be sure. This should be listed in the owners manual that came with the car or just call the nearest dealer and ask them.Do I need to change my transmission fluid on my 2006 Mitsubishi Galant?
depending on your car, some new cars are supposed to get their first fluid changes such transmission quite early due to the break-in and not according to regular schedule but after a certain amount of time then you follow the regular changes.

Always refer to the owners manual in the glove box. In the book you will see the recommended fluid change intervals for all your fluids. They are recommended by mileage for normal driving, but if you drive hard or do severe driving and a lot of stop and go, then change the fluids more often. Check Transmission fluid on the dipstip and look for a nice pinkish red color and no burn smell.

I have to change the transmission fluid. I don't have a car manual and while it's probably really simple, I just want to be a bit better informed. Could you give me a detailed description of where the cap is and whether or not you can drain it and how? Where is the drain-hole? How much fluid do they take? I'll be honest, I dont know what a commodore is. Some Asian and European cars have drain plugs for the transmission, very few domestics do. Either way, my recomondation is to have a shop do a proper trans flush for around $100 which will replace all your trans fluid instead of the half of it that a drain %26amp; fill does.(half of it will not drain from the torque converter, shift selenoids, valve body etc.)

How much for manual transmission fluid change?

1999 Honda Civic ex coupe....how much to change fluid from HONDA only!!!!!! thanksHow much for manual transmission fluid change?
$60 to $100 sounds right, However, you might want to research flushing the system before hand. My local shop made me sign a waiver before they would flush it, just because it had 70,000 miles on it. I went ahead with the flush and fill and thankfully I made it another 70,000 miles. I just recently had it serviced again, Only this time I just had it drained and filled, on the advice of a different shop, where I had it serviced. Their reasoning ( both shops) was that some of the Components inside the transmission just cant handle all of the pressure that flushing a system creates. Good luckHow much for manual transmission fluid change?

A standard/manual transmission I would not concern myself with until 100k.An automatic has a change schedule in the manual. When you do change it get the gasket/filter kit from your supplier.Get the car lifted and blocked so it can not come down or roll on you. Then place a large pan under the pan. Loosen the pan bolts part way and loosen the pan allowing the fluid to drain.Take the pan off and completely clean away any remnants of the gasket.Do this to the transmission too.You will see the filter in the transmission.Sometimes they are pressure fitted or bolted

Remove filter and replace with new one.Sometimes there are O rings to replace too.Clean the pan and place some Silicone on it to hold/seal the gasket.Reverse the steps and add transmission fluid.I recommend getting a Chilton manual (library?) for your year/model of car to be certain this is done correctly. It is quite easy to do but the bolts have exact torque settings and most transmissions today are aluminum.

If you were doing it yourself about 90-100 dollars. Fluids, filters, a local shop could probably hook you up for the same money, with the stuff they have on hand. BMW, maybe that's an extra nickle, if your car is really nice then do it yourself.

I have a 2000 chevy blazer 4x4, I want to change the transmission fluid. How do I drain the old transmission fluid? How do you change the transmission fluid in a 2000 chevy blazer?
There is only one way to change all of the transmission fluid in any vehicle, and that is a transmission flush. Most flush machines either use the transmissions own fluid pump to provide the pressure to flush the unit.

The alternative is to remove the transmission pan, clean everything (go ahead and replace the transmission filter while you are in there) then reassemble and add fluid.

The problem with a pan drop is that you only really replace about 3-4 quarts of the 8-10 quarts in your transmission. The other 5-6 quarts of fluid are in you torque converter, valve body and lines and cannot be drained out without extensive disassembly. That being said, replacing the 3-4 quarts is better then nothing.

Keep in mind that a transmission filter replacement is usually a maintenance item, and not considered a repair. You don't replace the filter to fix a transmission that is not shifting or is not working (though sometimes it can restore functionality, usually having starved the transmission of fluid due to a clogged filter will cause irreparable damage)

Transmission fluid change in a bmw?

i wanted to know if it is possible to change the transmission fluid in a 2000 bmw 323i. i know theres no dipstick to check it and i wanted to know if it is possible to change it by a mechanic. n i live on long island, ny does anyone know how much it would cost. since they call it lifetime i know its not so it can changed without damaging it right?Transmission fluid change in a bmw?
You can and should change the automatic transmission fluid on BMW's. The %26quot;lifetime%26quot; nomenclature is bogus. Who's lifetime? The transmission, the car, yours?

The transmission has both fill and drain plugs. 323i's produced through 2/2000 use either Dexron III or Texaco ETL 7045E. The transmission should be marked to show which is required. From 3/2000 on they use ESSO LT71141. Again, the transmission should be marked. If they are marked, you WILL need too use the (expensive; $16.95/qt, roughly, 6.2 quarts required) BMW fluid to refill it, but it's still much cheaper than buying a new transmission.

Go to a BMW specialist (find one near you on bimrs.org) and they'll have the right fluid and other parts available to do the job. If you fancy doing it yourself, bavauto.com sells the fluid, filter and gaskets you'll need. Be warned though, it's a messy job, and it's important to keep the inside of the tranny scrupulously clean!Transmission fluid change in a bmw?

I would like to change the automatic transmission fluid (ATF) to prevent future damge to the transmission. For this reason, I have a few questions. First, what kind of ATF do I need? Second, what specialized tools are required? Third, can anyone provide me with a good protocol to accomplish this task? Thank youHow to change the transmission fluid in a 2000 jetta gls?
The late model VW automatic transmissions have a special proceedure to add fluid to the transmission to refill it once it has been drained. This is the reason that the VW has a %26quot;lifetime%26quot; automatic transmission fluid.

You cannot just drain and refill the transmission; the transmissions use a Volkswagen only supplied fluid for starters; the proceedure requires usage of the VAG diagnostic scanner, running the engine until a certain temp is reached then having the transmission suck the fluid in.

The proceedure takes about an hour or so to do, depending on the air temperature and the temp of the engine. You have to do the proceedure with the tool as defined by the factory or you can blow the seals in the transmission. Its important that only someone who is familiar with the proceedure do it.

I think its a good idea to change the fluid given the miles that you have on the vehicle; take it to a dealership or a VW specialist who is likely to have the correct diagnostic tool/software to complete the task. The fluid isn't cheap either, so don't surprised at the cost; I think the fluid alone costs more than 80.00 or more now (i've been away from the VW dealership since December of 2005).

Hope this helps, a car nut.How to change the transmission fluid in a 2000 jetta gls?

05 Infiniti G35 AT transmission fluid change question?

    Hi.

I drive 05 Infiniti G35 AT. It has 44,000 miles and it feels like I have to do transmission fluid change.

The fact is, I have never done one by myself so I am going to purchase fluids (Nissan Matic S) and take it to a repair shop.

The question is, how many quarts should I buy? I am not doing transmission flush.

If anyone has any experience with it, please let me know how much quarts I need to buy.05 Infiniti G35 AT transmission fluid change question?
Why not call an oil change shop and ask them? They'll be glad to tell you, and they have the data on their computer.

Shifting in 2002 Maxima SE "Notchy". Time to change transmission Fluid?

Just bought a 2002 6 speed with 89k miles on it from an older guy who babied it- kept all service records and really kept good care of it. The one thing I noticed though, is the shifting is pretty %26quot; notchy%26quot; .. especially getting into second from first. I would never know what the description of a %26quot; notchy%26quot; transmission was until I felt it myself. Best way to describe is it is that it feels like im slighting fighting to get it into gear.. No grinding , just not smooth... like I'm going over a notch when I'm trying to shift. Read online that it might be time to change transmission fluid if this is the case. Decided to order some red line mt-90 that should be here on Thursday:

    1) Does this seem to make sense to anyone? could a change in transmission really all of a sudden give me smooth shifting relative to my problem?

    2) I also heard about adding a lubricant like 'synchromesh%26quot; in with the transmission fluid change. My question there is how do you know how much to add and how do you do it?- is this necessary?

    3) Any other possible causes for a notchy transmission I havent covered?

    4) Anything I want to remember when changing the tranny fluid myself that Might be helpful?

Thanks for your help in advanced guys!

try everything you have mentioned, if it doesnt work you may have a bad syncro, or clutch starting to wear. either way it may require inspection.Shifting in 2002 Maxima SE %26quot;Notchy%26quot;. Time to change transmission Fluid?
First of all, changing the fluid and using the RIGHT fluid would be helpful. It should be done, anyways, Check with your dealer for the proper weight and proper manufacturer. BUT, another factor is the shifter bushings, under the car. They may be time worn, or dry. A good inspection will prove weather it is necessary to change the bushings, or just to lubricate them.Shifting in 2002 Maxima SE %26quot;Notchy%26quot;. Time to change transmission Fluid?
it either needs the fluid and filter changed if it,s automatic or if it,s manuel maybe the clutch needs adjusted.

I take my car to the Mobil 1 Express Lube myself. They have a special machine which makes the job go by quickly. I know, I'm such a girl. How to change transmission fluid?
On the side of the manual tranny, there are 2 bolts

    (1) filler bolt

    (2) drain bolt.

The oil change is as simple as opening the drain and letting out the old oil. The using a long funnel from the top (or hand pump from below) just pour it in till full. You cannot over fill it, as you are suppose to fill it to the filler bolt.

ONE WARNING: some japanese cars (like my Honda) does NOT use the ticker gear oil. My Honda use the regular ENGINE OIL in the tranny. Verify the exact oil needed for you car first.

good luck...How to change transmission fluid?
theres a drain plug and a filler plug on the side of the tranny all you do is take out the drain plug and let it drain then put it back in the take out the filler plug and just start putting the fluid in
