I've just bought a 1987 Suburban with a 350 TBI engine, it has an automatic 700 transmission, assuming the speedo has only rolled over once, it shows 137,000 miles. What would be the best oil to use, and how many quarts? Also i'd like to change the transmission fluid, best kind and quarts? What brand of spark plugs work good? Engine: 5 quarts if you change the oil filter.
Transmission: The 700-R4 transmission holds 6 quarts if is dry but dropping the pan to change the filter will only drain about 5 quarts because the valve body and front pump will retain at least a quart. Add 4 quarts of Dexron III ATF after you have finished changing the filter and then start the engine, check the fluid level with the engine running in PARK, and add accordingly. Total system fill is 11.5 quarts if you decide to completely flush the entire transmission fluid system.

i have an 88 c1500 and i use 5 quarts of kendal oil 10w-30 and i have a aftermarket transmission cooler on my truck, but be for i added the cooler on I would use about 6 or 7 quarts of valvoline max life dext/merc for GM vehicles, but if your looking for the best fluids to put in it both oil and tanny fluid i would go with Royal purple. hope this helps.How many quarts for my oil and transmission fluid in my 1987 Suburban?
It will take 5 quarts if its the standard pan. Some people put on bigger after market pans but the stock engine used 5 quarts. Drop the pan on the trans and change the filter. Usually when people get a transmission service they only exchange the fluid, so you end up with the old filter. It will use about 6 quarts, you only get whats in the pan not the converter. But I still prefer half the fluid and the new filter. Also don't forget the clean the magnet at the bottom of the trans pan. With that many miles save yourself some money and don't throw it away on expensive synthetic oil. Use conventional, I would use 10-40 with that many miles. And before all the driveway hero's (non professional mechanics) start crying because they like to use synthetic oil here's why you don't need to. When you are the original owner and you have always used synthetic it will help and increase the life and cleanliness of the engines internals. But when you get an engine with that many miles and have no idea how often the last owner changed oil you are not going to improve anything by now switching to synthetic.
