Questions about transmission service (fluid and filter change)?

I need to get a transmission fluid and filter change on my '98 Cavalier LS and want to do it as cheaply and effectively as possible.

I researched and found that transmission service can include: dropping the pan and changing the filter %26amp; some but not all of the fluid; various %26quot;flushes%26quot;; and a %26quot;T-Tech%26quot; fluid exchange (which Jiffy Lube uses). I assume that different places do different things, and I've seen prices ranging from $80 to $215 for %26quot;transmission service.

My questions:

What method of transmission service do you think is best?

Are most shops willing to tell you what method they use?

How much should each method of transmission service cost?

I would love to do it myself, but I don't think I have the right tools or place to do the job...Questions about transmission service (fluid and filter change)?
I would do it the old fashioned way, drop the pan and change the filter and refill the tranny but thats just me, I have been doing it that way for years with no tranny problems and it's a lot cheaper than the new fangled way of flushing the tranny and not changing the filter.Questions about transmission service (fluid and filter change)?
If your fluid still has good color %26amp; does not smell burnt. then drop the pan %26amp; change the filter %26amp; fill it back up.

If it is black %26amp; or smells burnt. Have it changed at jiffy lube so they can remove all the fluid. Then insist on changing the filter after that or do it yourself.

flushes are great IF they first drop the pan and change the filter, clean the clutch dust from the pan and magnet(if equipped)
